A glance at my career in publication design, photography, art/photo direction and styling.
Publication Design: I have 13 years experience in publication and layout design. My four years as a Senior Designer at The Stelter Company allowed me to work on newsletters, brochures and other marketing materials for clients such as American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts of America, The Field Museum and The Shedd Aquarium. This intense amount of design work prepared me to easily transition into layout design freelance work and eventually into look book designs for my commercial photography clients. I went on to do freelance work for several companies that needed daily layout work.
Ad Design: My first job in design was for Kinseth Hospitality where I designed for Bennigan's, Green Mill, and several Holiday Inn properties in the Midwest. I also freelanced for Land Mark Properties and did flyers, posters, billboards, sales sheets and more.
Logo Design + Business Cards/Hang Tags: When taking images I think about how they can be used for various mediums. White space and text placement is constantly at the forefront when planning images for my clients.
ART DIRECTION + STYLING
Art Direction: I currently have my own commercial photo studio where I wear all hats of the business. I manage social media content, write blog posts and create content for Hello Charlie. I plan and execute wardrobe styling and set styling for each shoot. I book and coordinate the talent and manage a group of over 200 local mini Des Moines models. During the shoots I art direct, photograph and manage my team of stylists, freelance photographers and interns. If my clients need look books I design those, I have done logos, hang tags and business cards as well. My clients range from small shop owners who are handmaking their designs to labels like Hallmark Baby.
Set Design: my style for my sets is to have texture, color, balance, and space. Designing and planning a set requires several weeks of planning, coordinating and execution.
Wardrobe Styling: For every shoot I style, coordinate and order pieces to complete the client's looks. I love to work with small businesses and often try to coordinate with them so cross promotion for the images will be possible. They often have the unique clothing pieces I am looking for to set my shoots apart from the rest.
Prop Styling: I often create my own props. I use inspiration from the clothing pieces and craft away. If I do create my own props I will blog about them so my followers can see the entire process. I also coordinate and order any other pieces I want to use to help create the look of the shoot.
Set Design: along with styling and creating props I design the sets for each shoot whether the client prefers a lifestyle look or a more commercial look for their line.
Content Creation: every small business owner has to wear many hats. I create and direct my own shoots to keep my readers interested in my business. Many times they want to know how I made a prop or set so I will break out the steps and write a blog piece that can travel across Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. I have to engage my audience on every platform and keep their interest with every post.
Product Photography: styling and photographing product photos and flatlays are one of my favorite things to do. I love mixing and matching patterns and textures to create visually appealing images.
